Give Sedona PhotoFest Your Best Shot

Throughout the month of July Sedona Art Center is hosting a month long celebration of photography that is unparalleled in Northern Arizona. This extraordinary event, Sedona PhotoFest 2010: Southwest Photography Competition, Symposium and Exhibition brings 24 world class landscape photographers together from July 18-25, and includes a kids photography camp, evening events and documentary films in partnership with the Sedona Film Festival. Designed to engage all photography enthusiasts from beginner to professional, Sedona PhotoFest also features the first annual Red Rock Open photography competition.

“Photography allows you to capture a moment in time and preserve it for the future,” notes Sedona Art Center Executive Director Mei Wei Wong, “
Sedona PhotoFest is a celebration of landscape photography’s power to capture the world around us.”

The "Red Rock Open" Public Photography Competition which kicked off on June 21 is the first ever competition of its type in Northern Arizona. Over $1,000 in prizes will be awarded during the PhotoFest Awards Gala on Friday, July 23rd. All images submitted prior to PhotoFest will be presented on screen at the Community Exhibition Gallery of the Sedona Arts Center during the month of July.
The Contest is open to any photographer 18 years of age and older. The entry deadline is 5:00 PM MST on July 20, 2010.

All photographers whether professional or amateur and even those who simply love the power of a photograph are invited to submit their best shots. Sedona PhotoFest has developed a guide to 21 locations with best times and directions posted at sedonaphotofest.com. Their savvy photography committee in preparation for the Red Rock Open scouted these locations categorized into easy, moderate or strenuous hikes for all to participate.

The Sedona PhotoFest Symposium offers a banquet of opportunity from the 18th through the 25th. Pulitzer-winning photographer Jack Dykinga will serve as "Master Photographer-in-Residence.”  Dykinga blends landscape photography with documentary photojournalism. His landscape art photography, magazine contributions, and nine wilderness advocacy, large format books are world-renowned. He is a captivating public speaker whose work is driven by his passionate advocacy for preservation of the natural world. He is a regular contributor to Arizona Highways and National Geographic magazines.

Other remarkable presenters include: Peter Ensenberger, Arizona Highways Director of Photography for 18 years, Arizona Highways photographer Jeff Kida, J. Peter Mortimer former Arizona Highways Photography Editor,
Christopher Robinson, Editor, Outdoor Photographer magazine and Rob Sheppard, acclaimed author and digital photography expert, also recently retired editor of Outdoor Photographer magazine. For a full schedule and list of presenters please go to sedonaphotofest.com.

The public is invited to join Sedona Art Center throughout the entire month of July in this celebration of landscape photography.
All photographers whether profession or amateur and those who simply love the power of a photograph are encouraged  to participate. To compliment the Red Rock Open, Sedona Art Center is also giving free talks on Saturday mornings at 9am to help participants scout out the best locations. Talks will take place on July 3rd, 10th and 17th in one of the Sedona Art Center Classrooms.  For  more information about Sedona PhotoFest, the Red Rock Open and Kids Photo Camp please go to sedonaphotofest.com or call Sedona Arts Cednter at 282-3809.
