Calling All Potters – Loving Bowls Needed
A unique and philanthropic event, LOVING BOWLS, returns to Sedona in December 2009. Twelve years ago, Ed Oshier, at the suggestion of his wife, Mary Jane, proposed an event that would benefit the Sedona Adult Community Center’s “Meals on Wheels” programs. The result was the founding of a wonderfully successful event, LOVING BOWLS, patterned after a national program called “Empty Bowls.”
Ed Oshier and Denise Lapp, Executive Director of the Community Center, engaged twenty potters to donate handmade ceramic bowls to be sold at what they hoped would become an annual two-day event. The 1st Annual Loving Bowls in 1997 was a huge success with 350 pieces donated by local artists. Every bowl was sold in two days, earning over $4000. The event continued each year until Denise Lapp resigned her position with the Community Center. Without a champion at the helm, the event disappeared.
Sedona Arts Center has chosen to resurrect Loving Bowls in 2009. It is being spearheaded by Dennis Ott and the Center’s Ceramics Studio. The benefactors will be: the Adult Community Center’s “Meal on Wheels” program, the Old Town Mission of Cottonwood, and the Sedona Arts Center’s Scholarship Fund.
This is the official call to potters. The challenge has been set ~ 500 bowls donated by local area potters to sell at $10.00 each; plus twenty hand-painted, glazed bowls by local celebrity artists to be sold through a silent auction. Everyone who has clay experience is invited to participate! Come in and create bowls for the event. They can be hand-built or wheel-thrown. All you need to bring is yourself, your talent, and your willing hands - everything else will be provided! This is a joint venture of many giving hearts.
Sedona Arts Center is providing clay, glazing and firing of all bowls made possible through a generous gift to cover the costs of the event. Sedona Arts Supply will provide low-fire glazes.
There is open studio time every Thursday afternoon from 1 – 4pm at the Arts Center’s Ceramics Studio. You can begin immediately! For more information on how to participate, please call Dennis Ott at the Arts Center Studio (928) 282-3809 OR (928) 284-0007.
The two-day event is scheduled for First Friday, December 4th (5 – 8pm) and Saturday, December 5th (10am – 3pm) pm. More details on the event itself will follow as the time draws near.
The Sedona Arts Center and Ceramics Studio is located at the corner of State Route 89A and Art Barn Road at the north end of Uptown Sedona - on the right just before you enter Oak Creek Canyon. For information on classes or exhibits, call 928-282-3809 or visit our website: SedonaArtsCenter.com
Friday evening will be a festive affair! With the purchase of each bowl, you will have the opportunity to fill it with delicious hot chili to warm the bones on a cold winter’s night, plus beverage and wonderful chocolates for desert (provided by a generous donor).
