Plans are under way for the 45th Annual Jerome Historic Home and Building Tour on May 15-16th. This longest running tour in the state of Arizona promises a look at both the historic gems of this charming town and a recently completed Jerome contemporary delight with astonishing views of the Verde Valley. This is a guided tour with transportation provided from home to home. The all-volunteer docents will explain the history and the fascinating stories behind each venue. The 2010 Line-up - The Sullivan House The Mills House The United Verde Apartments The Christ Church of Jerome - 1927 The Connor Hotel The Kinsella House The Gutierrez Cottage The Audrey Headframe Park Spook Hall – Lawrence Memorial Hall This year promises to be an exciting and interesting tour of 8 Jerome Originals. The 45th Annual Tour will include a visit to 3 residential homes on the vertical back streets of Jerome, lovingly restored and lived in – much as the original residents did 100 years ago. This year’s only contemporary home, The Kinsella House, offers forever views of the Verde Valley on three levels and has been hand built by one of Jerome’s long-time residents who after almost 40 years in town can tell the history of Jerome better than most. The Historic Connor Hotel, built in 1898, will be opened to the public as well as the United Verde Apartments, which housed miners, offices and clinics. In 1918, it was the nicest building in town and the public will take a look inside renovated spaces now featuring a vacation rental, charming apartments and shops. The Christ Church of Jerome, which now houses the Jerome Historical Society, is a lovely 1927 building that has served this magical town for almost 100 years. The Mills House on the Boardwalk is a delightful Victorian renovation that was home to one of the mine’s first supervisors and was the birthplace of his son Mark Mills, a Frank Lloyd Wright disciple and one of the foremost architects of his time. On Society Hill, The Sullivan Home, with its delightful gingerbread details and perfect Victorian profile will delight history buffs with its authenticity and attention to detail. The Gutierrez Cottage was once home to musician and restaurateur Alfredo Gutierrez and his fashion designer wife known as “Alfredo’s Wife” and now boasts one of the town’s loveliest gardens, thanks to current owners Karen and Steve Cheifetz. The Audrey Headframe Park is recently opened as Jerome’s newest attraction. This is the largest and oldest mining structure in Arizona. End the tour with refreshments at Jerome's famous 'Spook Hall'. As an added bonus, a ticket to the Home Tour will entitle the holder to free admission to the Jerome Mine Museum.
Something special has been added to the mix this year. Re-enactment groups will gather in Jerome on Home Tour Weekend to entertain the crowd. The Jerome Chamber will host the History of the West Time Line Event in conjunction with their 45th Annual Historic Home and Building Tour. The Time Line event will feature the time period of the 1860's to 1898.There will be Battle Reenactments and Living History activities through out the day at various spots around Jerome. The event showcases groups that portray the American Civil War, the Cowboys of the 1870s and the Rough Riders of the Spanish American War. There will be camps for you to tour and ask questions of the historians and see the dress and weapons from the various time periods. Throughout the day, there will be demonstrations and mock battles showing the weapons, clothing and tactics used by the Westerners of the time periods. The proceeds from this event will benefit The Jerome Chamber of Commerce projects for the coming year. Tours begin at 9:00AM with the last one each day starting at 3:00PM.Tickets for adults are $12 and children 3-12 are $6 with 2 and under free. For more information, contact Coleen at (928) 649-3847.
The Sullivan House, on Society Hill in Jerome, is the shining star of this year’s 45th Annual Historic Home and Building Tour. Not only is this Victorian gem from 1886 a lovingly restored gem in the mile high town but it is also filled with owner Sherry McMahon’s collection of incredible antiques and collectibles. No surprise since she and husband Curtis Lindner own Papillion Antiques in Jerome and Sherry and partner Jennifer McDonald own Papillion II Antiques in Old Town Cottonwood. Last year, the highlight of the event was The Pink Lady House; partner Jennifer’s perfect Victorian digs. Everything in the house has a story and has been placed with care to create a comfortable and livable environment that harkens another time. Music is a love in this home and a piano, a trombone, a harp, a group of stringed instruments and didgeridoos are all part of the living room décor along with amazing art from all over the globe. Searching the world for the treasures of a by-gone era, McMahon returns with unusual finds that fill her with excitement and the joy of sharing each story with visitors. A vintage knife sharpener, a Remington gas stove, a Majolica lamp with hand-beaded shade are each perfectly integrated into the pleasing mix in this lovely home.
