Hidden B&Bs of the Verde Valley

Hidden B&Bs of the Verde Valley
By Roger Naylor

As visitors drive through the towns of the Verde Valley they’ll see a staggering array of lodging choices. There are many wonderful options, too numerous to mention. But what about visitors looking for seclusion, a place slightly off the beaten path?  They’re in luck as well, because the area is blessed with passionate people who felt compelled to hang out “Mi casa es su casa” signs along unbeaten paths all across the Valley.

Some of the most delightful inns are located down a dirt road or tucked away in quiet neighborhoods. Staying in one of these secretive gems allows visitors to savor natural beauty and man-made comfort while dodging crowds. Not always easy to find, yet always worth the journey, here are a few of the hidden B&Bs of the Verde Valley.

Camp Verde
Luna Vista Bed and Breakfast
– Luxury and romance await visitors just a short drive down a dirt road in this secluded treasure surrounded by scenic forest and perched near the banks of Beaver Creek. Whatever type of getaway you’re looking for, hosts Frank and Kala will take care of every detail. Enjoy exquisite rooms, collected artworks and beautifully landscaped grounds during the day and a glittery brew of stars each night. Come as guests, stay as friends, return as family. 1062 E. Reay Rd., 800-611-4788, lunavistabandb.com.

Flying Eagle Country Bed & Breakfast
Flying Eagle Country Bed & Breakfast
Clarkdale
Flying Eagle Country Bed & Breakfast
– Any time you’ve got a mountain as your back yard, you know you’re staying someplace special. The Flying Eagle sits at the base of Mingus Mountain, surrounded by a swath of open space perfect for wildlife viewing. Choose between two rooms in the main house or your own private guest house that comes with wood burning stove and kitchenette. All guests have use of a heated spa on the patio. Start your day with a hearty country breakfast, or you can opt for a lighter budget-friendly continental meal. 2700 Windmill Lane, 928-634-0663, flyingeaglecountry.com.

The Desert Rose offers world class luxury and amenities at an affordable small town price. Our quaint desert setting will give you the most authentic Arizona experience. We are very centrally located, only 15 miles from Sedona, 10 miles from Jerome, 16 miles from Cliff Castle Casino and Montezuma's Castle, and no more than 10 miles from at least 3 wineries. The manor contains different size rooms to suit every travelers needs and budgets, as well as multiple living rooms to provide our guests with privacy if needed. Our expansive lush, green 1.5 acre gated grounds have lovely gardens, stone paths, a tranquil fountain and so much more. The perfect place to relax and unwind, or start your Arizona adventure.
Desert Rose Bed and Breakfast
Cottonwood
Desert Rose Bed and Breakfast – Nestled in a quiet neighborhood, the Desert Rose offers ultra comfort mixed with small town charm. Situated on a lush 1.5 acres, this newly-opened inn is one of the few family-friendly B&Bs, welcoming well-behaved children and small dogs. They’ll have plenty of room to romp on the wide grassy lawn. A beautiful fountain serenades visitors, while in their rooms or relaxing amidst the gardens.  4190 E. Bridle Path Rd., 928-646-0236, desertrosebandb.com.

Cottonwood
The Annabel Inn –
Staying at The Annabel Inn is like staying at a friend’s house. Assuming your friend is charming, enthralling, and a fantastic cook who anticipates your every need. But until your social circle includes such a super hero, just make reservations at this traditional European cottage B&B. Owner Annabel Sclippa has created a warm, cozy and eco-friendly environment just steps from restaurants and art galleries of Old Town. With only three rooms, Annabel caters to her guests’ preferences when preparing breakfast. Her specialties include French toast stuffed with fruit, and baked eggs. Anyone needing even more indulgence can order the three-course caviar and smoked salmon breakfast for two. 611 N. 7th St., 928-649-3038, theannabelinn.com.

Jerome
Heavenly View Bed & Breakfast
– This aptly named elegant Victorian was built in 1995. Away from the “bustle” of downtown, the gracious inn is operated by George and Joleen Davis. Heavenly could also apply to the plate-draping Southern-style breakfasts. With only two units available, you’ll be able to relax and unwind. Birders may never want to leave the terraced garden where the flash of feathers and the call of birdsong are constant. 778 East Ave., 928-634-8578, heavenlyviewbandb.com.

Cottage Inn – Staying in this charm-laden inn is as comforting as a trip to Grandma’s house. Better, actually, because Grandma probably never offered to whip up a yummy batch of Scotch eggs. This English pub treat consists of hard-boiled eggs wrapped in sausage and bread crumbs, seasoned and baked. Of course, more traditional breakfasts are also available. Both the Garden and Patio Suite are refreshingly old-fashioned and offer private porches to enjoy sprawling mountainside views. 747 East Ave., 928-634-0701,
cottageinnjerome.com
.

Sedona
Grace’s Secret Garden
– Outside of town in a peaceful canyon laced by foot and horse trails, sits the deliciously cozy (only three rooms) Grace’s Secret Garden. Grace’s passion for baking—always a wonderful quality in a hostess—and vivacious personality, coupled with the serene setting makes a visit here an unforgettable experience. You bring the horses, Grace provides the stables. 1240 Jack’s Canyon Rd., 800-579-2340, gracessecretgarden.com.

The Lodge at Sedona – If your Romance checklist includes things like fireplace, private deck with outdoor hot tub and twin massage showers, this secluded retreat may be the place you've dreamed about. A five-course breakfast, in-room massages and sunset hors d'oeuvres are sweet perks. The Lodge is cradled by two acres of serene gardens, mature pines and calming waterfalls.  All rooms are artistically decorated but snag the Red Rock Crossing King Suite if possible. 125 Kallof Place, 800-619-4467,
lodgeatsedona.com
.

The Penrose – Nestled on a high ledge of Castle Rock, The Penrose commands jaw-dropping vistas of the Sedona landscape. Inside, you feel like you’re outside, with uncluttered white walls drawing the focus to massive windows at every turn. The eclectic room décor could have tumbled from the pages of a Pottery Barn catalog. A gourmet breakfast is served on the sun-splashed patio. 250 Red Butte Dr., 888-678-3030,
thepenrose.com
.

Sedona Cathedral Hideaway – This magnificent inn seduces guests with a uniquely personalized getaway. Wraparound views engulf the two luxury suites. The selection of features is so long, even some amenities have amenities. Gourmet breakfasts are custom made and professional spa services are available on premises. With this pampering cruise-ship mentality that the owners Larry and Kathy Jaeckel bring to bear, it’s impossible not to leave feeling utterly rejuvenated. Bonus: You can hike to Cathedral Rock in five minutes. Red Rock Loop Rd., 866-973-3662,
sedonacathedralhideaway.com
.

Boots and Saddles Sedona B&B – Cowboy luxury could be the theme of Boots and Saddles, where the rooms are given names like "Gentleman Cowboy" and "Ghost Rider." But don’t be fooled by rustic monikers, these are some elegant digs. In room amenities include air-jetted tubs for two, fireplaces and telescopes for star gazing. No matter what type of vacation you want, owners Sam and Irith are there to provide it. 2900 Hopi Dr., 800-201-1944,
oldwestbb.com
.

Casa Sedona – Designed by a protégé of Frank Lloyd Wright to maximize the surrounding red rock views, this lovely 16-room inn nestles amidst manicured gardens. Each beautifully appointed room conveys a different theme, making this the perfect spot to be whisked away in a romantic fantasy. Hiking trails brush past the grounds which is good. You might need the exercise after digging into the lavish breakfast. 55 Hozoni Dr., 800-525-3756,
casasedona.com

Canyon Villa Inn of Sedona – There are views and then there are the views from Canyon Villa, the first Arizona bed and breakfast to receive the coveted AAA Four Diamond Award. A custom designed room, a gourmet breakfast and Bell Rock in your back yard. What else do you need? Well, the seasonally heated pool is a nice touch. Balconies and patios are positioned so that guests enjoy maximum privacy while savoring the spectacular panoramas. 40 Canyon Circle Dr., 800-453-1166, canyonvilla.com
.

Creekside Inn – This welcoming inn is a picturesque oasis with silver-tongued Oak Creek flowing right through the property. Guests feel like they’re miles from anything as they stroll through the sun-dappled grounds beneath graceful cottonwoods and sycamore trees, yet galleries and restaurants are near at hand.  Fish for trout, enjoy a picnic at water’s edge, or order a massage in the private gazebo perched on the creek banks.
99 Copper Cliffs Dr., 800-390-8621, creeksideinn.net
