Rhythm & Ribs Means Toe-Tapping, Finger-Licking Fun By Roger Naylor
It’s only appropriate that Rhythm & Ribs takes place at Cottonwood Kids Park. The family-friendly event that combines rollicking live music and delectable barbecued ribs just seems to bring out the kid in everyone. This is a dance-barefoot-in-the-grass and eat-with-your-fingers kind of day. And goodness knows, grownups can never get enough of those.
Rhythm & Ribs kicked off in 2006, quickly growing into one of Northern Arizona’s most popular festivals. On a picture-perfect Saturday in early October, one great band after another takes the stage to provide a soundtrack for the gala. Past performers have included local favorites like Major Lingo and national acts such as the Marshall Tucker Band and Blue Oyster Cult.
Besides guitar riffs and soaring harmonies, the smoky aroma of grill-kissed ribs fills the air. Rib vendors from around the state set up booths. Attendees receive three rib samples with admission and a chance to vote for their favorite. Along with the People’s Choice award, a panel of judges also selects a winning entry, and both badges of recognition are highly coveted by barbecue aficionados.
Rhythm & Ribs began as a casual community gathering but proved too good to keep secret. Now each year, thousands of music lovers, barbecue enthusiasts and fun seekers flock to Cottonwood for the festival. In addition to ribs, brisket and pulled pork sandwiches, vendors sell beer, sodas, water, ice cream and other foods. Youngsters flock to the Kids Zone, a collection of inflatable rides and attractions.
Meanwhile, grownups just relax at Rhythm & Ribs and let the afternoon roll by. They tap their feet to the music, lick sweet sauce from their fingers and wonder why on earth they don’t spend more days like this.
